What’s Going On in Boca
Hey Boca friends and family, future and former guests:
Here’s my first newsletter on my new website, designed by my lovely daughter, Maria. Where do I start? My goals, how about that. Well, obviously my website will allow me to communicate with past guests, let them know what’s going on, what to expect when they return, news about the Rio Horcones, our “undammed” river (wanna keep it that way). And to connect with future guests to give them a better idea of who we are, news of the town of Boca, the ambience, goals to improve our town and the people active in helping make those things happen.
As many of you know, things move slowly in Boca but much like the river, a shallow rock meandering flow becomes a torrent overnight; businesses open and then close (just when I included them in my information booklets) and then move on while others stay firmly planted in the community. So, I’ll start with what is going on now.
As you may know there has always been one-way into Boca and one-way out, but now they are building a new road, actually an extension of the one we have that goes through the parking area along the river and out to the highway. No doubt this will solve those minor traffic jams when all the beach-goers are going home for the day while those of us who live here hope we make that doctor’s appointment on time. They seem to be working quite diligently and not being a huge project will be done before next season, the high season as most of you probably know being January, February, March, and even April and May.
Garbage bins were installed on the town side near the swinging bridge but they are quite small and the garbage we all love so much spilling out into the street near the temporary bridge (more on that later) still remains. But as my motto goes, “Yeah, but we’re working on it!”. Ok, we’ve been shut down before for some BS reason having to do with certain forces and egos, but we are not giving up and maybe since the new road will be driving right past the mess, maybe someone will finally give us the permit we need (our last one was revoked due to the reason given above). So, hang in there and think positive thoughts about garbage. We can do that, right?
The Temporary Plank Bridge will be dismantled once again and stored for the winter when the rains come and thanks to all who donated with either money, labor or both. Hopefully, the City of Vallarta will see fit to replace the bridge that was taken out by Hurricane Nora some 5 years ago. With only one bridge and the possibility of losing that one in another storm during the hurricane season leaves little to no way to cross the river, unacceptable to those of us who live here, have emergency situations and possibly no way to cross the river for medical care, food, water, supplies, etc. Gotta make some noise!
The recent river festival led by Karla of Boca Divers was a success with vendors selling handmade bags and purses, original jewelry, food, educational displays, a great band, and happy tourists.
And we finally have a restaurant/bar on our side of the river! Actually, a first. Stephanie’s Bar and Restaurant has been a rousing success, simple elegance, plastic tables and chairs set under palapas, draped with white tablecloths and fresh-cut flower centerpies, a colorful little bar, jazz and blues quietly gracing the ambience, and fabulous food. One of my guests put her on google maps and she came up with 5-star reviews! I had the creamy chicken pasta, sooo good. If you want the seafood platter you must make a reservation a day ahead so the lobster, shrimp and fish are bought the next morning (talk about fresh).
That’s it for now, but if you have any questions or ideas that you want me to explore, feel free to leave suggestions.

See ya soon I hope
